With the end of my old review site and start-up of this one- along with major LIFE changes- this has been a hectic year to say the least!
2014 has been a slightly strange reading year: a few reading slumps, more rereads than before, and not as much YA read as usual. I feel as though I have become harder on books (especially YA!)- so that definitely changed how I approached genres this year. For 2015 I would like to push myself more- sink my teeth into more classics (in children’s, YA and adult), finish up waiting series, and expand my comfort levels a bit with adult fiction.
With that preamble out of the way, let’s get on my picks for top adult fiction titles I read this past year:
While I very much enjoyed Lawson’s breakout novel Crow Lake, I absolutely loved Road Ends. I was completely swept up in this often sorrowful, moving, and lovely Canadian story- told from three members of the vast Cartwright family. So much beautiful writing in this one, I just wanted to savor everything. I startled in sadness when I turned the last page.
I’ve become a big fan of Moriarty! In a way that reminds me of J.K. Rowling’s ability to interweave and plot with amazing precision, Moriarty keeps surprising me with her contemporary and suspenseful writing. Big Little Lies in particular kept me guessing right until THE moment of reveal.
A Grave Matter (Lady Darby Mystery #3) by Anna Lee Huber
My adoration for this historical mystery series in unabashed. With a great blend of: likable and intriguing main characters; a strong female protagonist; chilling mysteries; and a slow-burning tender romance, I think this third offering in the Lady Darby mystery series is the best one yet.
I am also a big fan of Rowling’s Cormoran Strike novels. While I have mentioned previously that I was not as wholly taken with this as the first Strike novel (there was almost a lavish number of minor characters in this one)- it was still terrifically sharp- and yes, definitely darker and more gory.
*Note: These are titles I have read in 2014; titles may have been published in previous years. Rereads are not included on this list.
